Conroe City is named after Houston lumberman, Isaac Conroe, who established a sawmill there in 1881.

Conroe is a significant city in Texas that is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan region. It is 40 miles north of Houston. In its southwest corner is the East Texas Piney Woods, while in its west is where the San Jacinto River flows. Conroe City is within the river’s watershed. From Lake Conroe which was dammed in 1973, the river flows southeast and becomes Houston’s alternative source of drinking water. Conroe’s underground consists of several geologic layers of aquifers, hence supplying the city’s fresh drinking water.
