THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WILLIS, TX

 

Willis is a city IS in Montgomery County, Texas USA. It is located in the northern part of Conroe. Willis Texas began its development in 1870. It started when the Union Pacific Railroad was built through the area. Piney Woods encompasses Willis as well. With this, its economy has been mostly driven by agriculture, lumber, and the manufacturing of related equipment. By 2010, Willis Texas’ population was 5,662 from 5,000 in 2008.

Before Willis was founded, its residents, in general, have lived in Danville, a settlement 4 miles away in what has been known now as New Waverly. After the Civil War, they started transferring to the Willis Texas area. In 1867, they established the Thomas Chapel United Methodist Church. This is by far the oldest church in Willis.

After 3 years, the main booming source of income in Willis Texas was shipping, farming, and the manufacture of lumber as well as the trade of agricultural products. They also started growing Cuban tobacco. Later on, Willis Texas became a hub for tobacco products. Oil was also discovered in the area. At present, Willis Texas economy is still in the lumber industry added to retail, service, and manufacturing.

Amenities in Willis, TX

Interstate 45 was built in the 1960s and also in the recent decade, the Texas State Highway 75, running parallel to Interstate 45 through downtown Willis. Farm to Market Road 1097 and Texas State Highway 150 connect Willis Texas to the west and the east, respectively. Union Pacific operates a railroad that travels north-south through Willis.

Sam Houston National Forest is located several miles west, north, and east of Willis Texas. Some other parks here are Lindley Park and Old County Ranch RV Park. The latter offers a pool area that is beautifully set up alongside BBQ and music.

Willis Youth Athletic Association is an outlet for those families looking to get out of the house and enjoy the game of baseball.  We are always in touch with county officials and do our best to be compliant with all state and county orders.   We look forward to a wonderful Spring/Fall 2022 season for our Willis Youth.

Schools in Willis, TX

Willis Texas public schools are operated by the Willis Independent School District (ISD) and Responsive Education Solutions.

They are C. C. Hardy Elementary School, Mel Parmley Elementary School, Edward B. Cannan Elementary School, A.R. Turner Elementary School, Vista Academy of Willis, and William Lloyd Meador Elementary School for elementary. Two middle schools include Robert P. Brabham Middle School and Lynn Lucas Middle School. All of the city is zoned to Willis High School in Unincorporated Montgomery County.

Some private schools here include Covenant Christian School. For colleges and universities, there is Lone Star College.
