Before the settlers came to Katy, the land was a vast open area for hunting by the Karankawa Indian tribes, a grassland for buffalos, deers, wild ducks, various birds, and wolves. Katy was called the “Cane Island ” named after the creek which is a tributary of Buffalo Bayou. This creek was filled with tall canes, but not endemic to the area. It was a railroad town in the mid-1980s, along the Missouri–Kansas–Texas (MKT) Railroad, parallel to the U.S. Highway 80. Route 90 (now Interstate 10) leads into Houston’s downtown area.
